Shelf life extension of peach palm heart packed in different plastic packages

ABSTRACT Peach palm heart (Bactris gasipaes) is a highly perishable product and, therefore, studies on extending its shelf life are quite necessary. Considering the high demand of this vegetable, study aimed to evaluate influence using different plastic packages in order extend peach natura. Stipes were collected from plants grown family farms located municipality Seropédica-RJ. peeled, sanitized and packed at Post-harvest Laboratory Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ). In experiment, following treatments applied: control without package (C), unperforated polyethylene bag (UPB), perforated (PPB), microperforated (MPPB), styrofoam tray + film (STPF). The material was stored cold chamber under controlled temperature (5±2oC) for 24 days then room (28±2oC) 25th day. Physical, chemical visual evaluations carried out 25 days, with samples submitted 0 (initial characterization), 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, storage. Microbiological performed 18 0, 16 results indicate that combined refrigeration efficient natura hearts, by reducing fresh mass loss, maintaining quality sample contamination. PPB, UPB MPPB showed good performance considering extension vegetable. Thus, we recommend acquisition cheaper packages, so smallholder farmers could obtain higher profitability.
